When our fourth grade students arrive at Mill Pond from the three Westborough kindergarten-through-grade-three schools, it marks the first time all students in the same grade come together in one Westborough school. These students will stay together as a class until they graduate from high school. To initiate a feeling of friendship and family among each class of students, we call them by the year in which they will graduate. We are currently home to the Classes of 2027, 2028 and 2029!
Mill Pond School has three school counselors, one for each grade. The counselors move up through each grade along with their students, allowing students to get to know and build rapport with their counselor, and in turn, the counselor is able to develop relationships with students and their families. One of the ways in which the counselors encourage relationships with their students is by moving their offices each year to be on the same grade floor as their students. The accessibility, consistency and approachability the counselors provide to their students by being so close greatly outweighs the tedious task of packing and unpacking that takes place each summer!
Students have many opportunities to connect with their school counselor. Students are greeted each morning by their counselor and are wished a good afternoon each day on their way out of school. Counselors are often at recess and lunch, and may visit classrooms join virtual meetings to support students in their active learning environments. Students also visit their counselor’s office for a variety of other learning experiences, either in person or remotely. Seeking help with challenges, sharing good news, handling feelings and thinking together about questions are a few of the many and varied reasons students visit the counselor’s office.
Developing excellent relationships with students and families is the priority of each school counselor. As caretakers, you know your children best. Through collaboration with your child’s school counselor, as well as teachers and administrators, your child will be encouraged and supported as a learner on this journey of academic, social and emotional growth. As our school motto proclaims… Learning and Caring…. It’s what we do here!
